Domaine Drouhin Oregon
2005 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

Click on the photo to download a high res zip file...The 2005 Vintage:

2005’s winter months were unusually dry and warm, which led to early bud break. A relatively cool, wet spring slowed the maturation process down and caused some uneven flowering over an extended period, which ultimately resulted in painfully low yields. But, the vines enjoyed a lovely, moderate summer, a fairly non-eventful September, and excellent ripening. For those who waited until October, harvest was calm and successful, and the wines are excellent.

Winemaking:

All of our Pinot Noir is handpicked into 25-pound totes. Once inside our four-level gravity flow winery, the grapes are hand-sorted, de-stemmed and gently placed in the fermentation tanks, where indigenous yeasts will start their work. All winemaking decisions are based on Véronique’s rigorous tasting program, often conducted in conjunction with her father, Robert Drouhin.

By the middle of November, all of our wine was safely in barrel. We use approximately 20% new oak with our Pinot Noir, which allows the character of the wine and the vintage to show through. Barrels are custom made for us in Burgundy, using oak hand-selected by Maison Joseph Drouhin from France’s best forests. Our goal is to produce Pinot Noirs with balance, elegance and finesse, with outstanding aging potential.

Véronique’s Tasting Notes:

From their earliest days in barrel, our 2005 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir has been a deep, dense wine. In contrast to the more delicate 2004, the 2005 is built on larger shoulders, with a strong backbone that will certainly reward extended aging. Pinot Noir’s delicate heart beats beneath, making for a complex drinking. Of course, one can happily enjoy the wine now with its expressive nose of lilac and violet blossoms, and a wild array of red and black fruits, white pepper, and clove. The body is rich and the finish long and silky, suggesting a minimum aging potential of 7 to 10
years.

2004 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

2004 has proven to be an exceptional vintage in Oregon. June was relatively cool, but July and August were extraordinarily hot. Mid-August rains were most welcome by the vines. The growing season finished with a near-perfect Septemberand early October, allowing us to pick grapes with excellent flavors and balance.

Winemaking:

All of our Pinot Noir is handpicked into 25-pound totes, then hand sorted and de-stemmed at our four-level gravity flow winery. Fermentations are long and careful. By the middle of November, all of our wine was safely in barrel. We use approximately 20% new oak with our Pinot Noir, which allows the character of the wine and vintage to show through. Barrels are custom made for us in Burgundy, using oak from France’s best forests. In 2004, as always, we never stray from our goal of producing Pinot Noirs with balance, elegance and finesse.

Véronique’s Tasting Notes:

The 2004 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is quintessential Pinot to me: beautiful, soft, feminine, and obviously pleasurable. The color is classic ruby red, and the wine has the medium body I look for. On the nose, the ‘04 is all cherries and crushed berries. On the palate, the wine is luscious and concentrated, leading to a long finish. I wouldn’t hesitate to drink the wine now, but I would be very happy to save several bottles to enjoy over the next 10+ years.

2003 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

Click on the photo to download a high res zip file...The 2003 Vintage:

The 2003 vintage growing season was long and dry, culminating in an unusually warm harvest. Most of our estate ripened to perfection within a very narrow window, which necessitated picking the majority of our vineyard between September 26 and 28. Thank goodness we were prepared for the frenzy of activity at the winery, and that preparation shows in the wines.

Véronique’s Tasting Notes:

The 2003 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is fun to drink! It carries deep flavors and complexity on its large shoulders. With a deep ruby red color, the ’03 Pinot Noir has a rich texture and mouth feel. The nose is a swirl of anise, earth, violets and berries, with notes of white and green tea. On the palate, there is plenty of commotion between the intense flavors of red and black berry, raspberry, white pepper and truffle, all wrapped in round tannins. This will be a pleasure now and for at least another 10 years.

2002 Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

Click on the photo to download a high res zip file...Véronique's Tasting Notes

CLIMATE & HARVEST: 2002 is already considered one of the all time great vintages in Oregon . A long, warm growing season produced ideal conditions for ripening Pinot Noir, particularly here in the Dundee Hills. Harvest began with the younger vines on September 28 th and remained uninterrupted by rain through October 14 th , when we concluded picking by bringing in our oldest blocks. Yields were less than two tons per acre and physiological grape maturity was ideal, as was evident in the wonderful balance between sugar ripeness and acidity. Simply put, 2002 was a year for Oregon's top winemakers to make extraordinary wines.

WINEMAKING : 95% of the Willamette Valley Pinot Noir comes from the Domaine Drouhin family estate, with the remaining 5% drawn from two neighboring sites and a third in the Eola Hills. All Pinot Noir was hand-picked into 25-pound totes, then hand sorted and de-stemmed at our four-level gravity flow winery. Fermentations were generally long and smooth, and from the earliest days it was clear that these wines would have rich, full flavors and remarkable texture. By the middle of November, the entire 2002 vintage was safely in barrel. As is our custom, there is never more than 20% new oak, which allows the character of the wine and vintage to shine through. Barrels are custom made for us in Burgundy , using Oak from France's best forests.

VÉRONIQUE'S TASTING NOTES : The 2002 Classique is a delightful wine laced with aromatics of intense fruit, cherry and red berries. True to the varietal and vintage, this Pinot displays ripe but refined tannins. This, combined with a hint of oak, lends to an opulent texture of elegance and lingering finesse. Pair this wine with any number of Burgundian specialties (Boeuf Bourguignon or Coq au Vin) and/or a selection of artisanal cheeses (Comte, Epoisses, Gruyere.) This wine is excellent now, but may also be enjoyed for another 10 years.

Véronique Drouhin-Boss, May 16, 2005

ADVANCE PRESS : Even before release, the wine press has been very excited about our '02 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Wine Spectator rated it 90 points, describing it as

'Stylish, supple, polished and generous with spicy mineral-scented cherry and raspberry flavors. Balanced, with lively acidity, lingering on the firm finish." ( May 31, 2005 ) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar scored it 89 points portraying it as "Bright, deep red. Musky, high-toned aromas of wild, red berries; very spicy, precise and focused. Fresh strawberry flavor, with good nerve and life. Finishes brisk and clean, with a pleasant, firm edge." (May/June 2005) The esteemed Burgundy critic Allen Meadows (aka Burghound) ranked it 88 points, saying "An elegant and very pinot nose of ripe red fruits and a subtle touch of earth combine with sweet, intense and delicious, rather briary flavors that offer a lovely mouth feel and fine length. This offers excellent quality for an entry level pinot and will be capable of several years of improvement." (October 2004) Food and Wine picked it as one of their "Top values"(May 2005).

9,800 cases were bottled in January 2004.

DDO Pinot Noir - Willamette Valley

About the Vintage

Another dry, warm year in the northern Willamette Valley. This was the third year in a row blessing us with superb grape-growing and harvesting conditions. Pinot-philes continue to debate which Oregon vintage is their favorite "the powerful '98s, the elegant and spicy '99s, or the lush and balanced 2000s. The 2000 vintage gave us what may be the most complete wines all-around "with big ripe fruits, velvety-textures, and superb finesse. Our 2000 Pinot is perhaps a mythical cross between our '98 and '99, and may ultimately be the best of these three great years.

Véronique's Tasting Notes:

2000 has given us finely sculpted and textured wines. The harmonious structure and lovely volume of our 2000 Pinot should age quite well, even though the wine is, to my personal taste, delicious to drink today. It is a refined Pinot Noir that should compliment all kinds of lighter dishes, not to mention an array of ripe and soft cheeses.

  • The grapes were picked by hand into small boxes holding a maximum of 25 lbs. This is important to insure than none of the fruit is crushed before it gets to the winery.

  • Cap punched down, juice pumped over and the wine tasted two to three times each day.

  • Aged in barrels sent from Joseph Drouhin's inventory. New oak content was about 20%.

  • Malolactic fermentation was completed naturally in barrels without inoculation.

  • Barrels were racked off in traditional fashion (by gravity).

  • Eliminated the barrel lots that did not meet a desired level of quality.

ANALYSIS AT BOTTLING : Alcohol 13.7 T.A. 6.04 pH 3.53
