Louise Red Hills Estate 1999 94 Points
A gorgeous wine, one of the finest I've tasted from Oregon, the medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Pinot Noir Louise bursts from the glass with super-ripe red fruits and spices. Sadly, only 75 cases (3 barrels) of this superb, powerful, refined gem were produced. Concentrated, lush, and dense, it is a big, thick, juicy offering loaded with magnificently ripened red cherries whose flavors linger for more than 30 seconds in the finish. Bravo! Anticipated maturity: now-2010. DDO Louise Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 1999 - The debut vintage of
cuvée Louise Drouhin The Domaine Drouhin wines have received world-wide acclaim from the press and the wine lovers year after year. The Pinot noir bottlings are frequently awarded "Outstanding" scores from the Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate critics, and the Chardonnay was recently named "Best New World White Wine" by the UK's influential Decanter magazine. Of the future, Robert Drouhin has said, "I would like to think that one day, people will taste Oregon wines, and particularly our wines and will say 'it is really true to the classic Burgundian Pinot Noir. Not a Côte de Beaune, not a Côte de Nuits, but uniquely Oregon." THE BIRTH OF CUVÉE LOUISE: Each year in the cellar, certain lots of our estate wine have shown themselves to be more elegant, more complex, and structured for maximum ageability. These lots have comprised the cuvée Laurène bottling. The idea behind Louise is take our quest for excellence one step further, and produce the finest expression of Pinot Noir we can make by selecting the individual barrels with the best possible qualities. From the 1999 vintage, wine was selected from three barrels for a sublime balance of elegance, complexity, and finesse. CLIMATE & HARVEST: A very dry summer resulted in extremely ripe and deeply-colored grapes. We were then blessed with superb weather during harvest. WINEMAKING: The grapes were carefully hand-picked into small boxes of 25 pounds. After quietly resting for a few days in the fermenters, fermentation started naturally and was conducted in the classical Burgundian method of punching down the cap, pumping-over the juice, and most importantly – tasting each lot of wine 2-3 times per day in order to make the best decisions. The wine was aged for over one year in 100% French oak barrels from our custom-made stock from Joseph Drouhin in Beaune. TASTING NOTES: Lovely, intense red color. Blackcurrant, licorice and spices on the bouquet. On the palate the wine is pure, complex, full-bodied, with an excellent structure and an optimal level of ripe tannins. It has depth and a great deal of finesse. A very well-balanced wine with a pure, long finish. Véronique DROUHIN April 11, 2002 714 bottles and 12 magnums produced
