Domaine Drouhin Oregon
2003 Pinot Noir Cuvée Laurène

The 2003 Vintage: The 2003 vintage growing season was long and dry, culminating in an unusually warm harvest. Most of our estate ripened to perfection within a very narrow window, which necessitated picking the majority of our vineyard between September 26 and 28. Thank goodness we were prepared for the frenzy of activity at the winery, and that preparation shows in the wines.

Winemaking: All of our Pinot Noir is handpicked into 25-pound totes, then hand sorted and de-stemmed at our four-level gravity flow winery. Fermentations are long and careful. By the middle of November, all of our wine was safely in barrel. We use approximately 20% new oak with our Pinot Noir, which allows the character of the wine and vintage to show through. Barrels are custom made for us in Burgundy, using oak from France’s best forests. In 2003, as always, we never stray from our goal of producing Pinot Noirs with balance, elegance and finesse.

Véronique’s Tasting Notes: The 2003 Pinot Noir Laurène has so much in the glass. The color is dark, but still in the family of classic ruby red Pinot Noir. The nose and the palate agree completely, as they both carry deep black fruit, crushed berry and lilac notes, along with the brighter cherry and white pepper I associate with our vineyards here in the Dundee Hills. I find all of the balance and elegance I look for, but with an extra degree of body. The ‘03 Laurène has the structure for at least 10 years of aging but the lush texture that makes me happy to drink it now. Santé! - Veronique Drouhin-Boss

2001 Pinot Noir Laurène

Véronique's Tasting Notes:

A wonderful successor to the 2000 bottling, this wine shares its predecessor's depth of red and black fruit flavors, while capturing even more vibrancy and balance. 2001 Laurène is a wine with a great spirit, a "joie de vivre," that jumps out of the glass and coats the palate with sweet fruit and the softness of silk. Decant for 30 minutes to enjoy the wine in its youth, or cellar for increased nuances and complexity until 2008-2011.

Laurène Pinot Noir 2000

CLIMATE & HARVEST: A superb, warm and dry year in the Red Hills of Dundee, the 2000 vintage allowed us to harvest grapes from our estate vineyard under ideal conditions. Each vineyard block was picked at its peak of flavor maturity and ripeness, leading to some of the most elegant and well-balanced wines we've produced to date.

WINEMAKING: As always, the grapes were picked by hand into small, 25 pound capacity boxes, ensuring that clean, pristine, uncrushed grapes arrive at our 4-level gravity flow winery. The grapes were gently de-stemmed and fed by gravity into the fermentation tanks, and were allowed to soak at the ambient temperature for 3-5 days prior to the start of fermentation. Fermentation was conducted by the naturally occurring yeasts that are present on the grape skins, as we prefer not to inoculate with cultured yeasts. We feel that this adds complexity to the finished wine, and helps preserve the unique qualities of the fruit from our estate vineyards.

The wine was aged in French oak barrels, of which less than 20% were new. Malolactic fermentation then occurred in barrel slowly over the winter and into the spring. Post-malo the wine was gravity-racked and allowed to settle again in barrel, and was then bottled in late January 2002.

The third of five excellent vintages in a row, 2000 gave us wines of intense flavors and great balance, hallmarked by ripe fruits, velvety textures, and exceptional length.

VÉRONIQUE'S TASTING NOTES: There is great harmony in the 2000 Laurène, a mélange of red and black fruits wrapped up in a silky texture and a long, elegant finish. One of my personal favorites, perhaps ultimately as lovely as the '93. Youthful and vibrant now, this wine should mature to its fullest complexity from 2007 - 2010+.

DDO Laurène Pinot Noir

Willamette Valley

1992 - The Birth of Laurène
In 1992 Domaine Drouhin Laurène Pinot noir was born. This was our first wine made from 100% estate-grown fruit. The wine is named after Véronique's first daughter, also born in 1992, and is produced in limited quantities every year. The Laurène is a selection of different lots of wine that show the deepest concentration of flavors, the most complexity, and have the structure for extended aging potential.

Laurene Pinot Noir is a made from a barrel selection. However, after many
years of tracking different lots of wine much of the grapes usually come
from a part of the vineyard they call "Lone Fir" vineyard. It is named
for the single Fir tree standing in the center as seen in the photo above.
